- Description: Can a candle do the smell trick? Does the blood pressure trial apply if your numbers are fine? Does a treadmill desk count? And should you give up the plunge?

| ✦ New Frontier Of Your Mind ✦ You wrote. I read all of it. Four came up more than once this fortnight. Each goes back to the paper it came from. One of them turned out the other way… I had it wrong until I checked. // Quick Check First reaction? 🤯 [Mind blown](mailto:ario0auyov0xny@outlook.com?subject=Reaction:%20Mind%20blown) 🔬 [More like this](mailto:ario0auyov0xny@outlook.com?subject=Reaction:%20More) 🤷 [Meh](mailto:ario0auyov0xny@outlook.com?subject=Reaction:%20Meh) // Mailbag 01 “Can I do the smell trick with a scented candle by the bed?” Closer to a yes than I thought. In the lab a machine read the brain waves and gave the smell in bursts. Nothing on a bedside table can do that. But a home study left scent by the bed all night, with no timing at all. Recall still went up, and by as much as the lab runs got. One rule holds either way. The same smell has to be there while you learn. Neumann and colleagues used unlit scented sticks, not a flame. Gains were larger again when the smell came back at test time. Please do not sleep beside a burning candle, for reasons that have nothing to do with memory. Does that China trial apply to me?” Not directly. Everybody in it had pressure nobody had got under control. The gain came from bringing a high number down. A settled number going lower is a different thing. SPRINT pushed treated patients to 120 and missed on dementia itself. It did land on mild cognitive trouble, which is the nearest thing to an answer for you. The village doctors also gave advice on smoking, weight and diet, so the tablets were not the only change. A week of home readings still tells you which of the two you are. Cuff on the upper arm. Sit five minutes first, then two readings a minute apart, morning and evening. Pick one and hit send. 💤 [The smell cue](mailto:ario0auyov0xny@outlook.com?subject=Poll:%20Smell) 🧡 [The cuff readings](mailto:ario0auyov0xny@outlook.com?subject=Poll:%20Cuff) 🚶 [The walk before writing](mailto:ario0auyov0xny@outlook.com?subject=Poll:%20Walk) // Mailbag 03 “Does a treadmill desk count as the walk?” That is close to what they used. The first experiment used a treadmill facing a blank wall. Idea output ran about 60% ahead of sitting. Walks ran five to sixteen minutes, at a pace people picked themselves. Keep single answer work for the chair. That got worse on the move. One more finding is worth having. People who walked and then sat straight down held the lift. So the walk buys you a session at the desk. Nobody has tested how short a walk still works, or how long the lift lasts. [↗ Source: Oppezzo and Schwartz, Journal of Experimental Psychology, 2014](https://www.apa.org/pubs/journals/releases/xlm-a0036577.pdf) // Mailbag 04 “I plunge for my head, not my legs. Should I stop?” Those trials cannot answer you. What they measured was muscle, after a lifting session. None of the eight size trials asked how anyone felt. Move it off the hour after the bar and you keep both. If the plunge is the best part of your week, keep it. Put it on a rest day, or the morning after. Nothing in these papers argues with that. [↗ Source: Roberts and colleagues, The Journal of Physiology, 2015](https://physoc.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1113/JP270570) // The Log What I ran this fortnight, and what came of it. 01 Cuff readings twice a day for a week. Mine sit lower than I thought. 02 The ten second stand, most mornings. Twelve on the left, eight on the right. 03 A walk before every draft. Two of these answers came out of one. 04 No cold water after leg day. Sorer for it, and that is the trade. None of this is evidence. It is one man keeping a log. That is the only trial you can run on yourself. One of those four answers is not the one I would have given. That is the useful part of a mailbag. A paper answers the question it asked, and no other. Keep sending them. The ones that stump me are the best ones. // Talk To Me What should I hold to the papers next?
