# Four Words That Open A Thought Reader

Some words were read in silence, and the rest were read out loud. Spoken words came back at about 76% on the test. Silent ones sat near 60%. Speech marks a word out, and the brain then has a hook to find it by. 01 Choose the lines that matter, a name or a dose. 02 Read them aloud in your ordinary voice. 03 Leave the rest of the page silent. 04 A whisper counts, though a full voice did better in the lab. 05 In a quiet room, mouthing the words still beat silence. The gain runs largest when only some lines get the voice. Read a page aloud from top to tail and it shrinks. Those numbers come off a word test, though the same lab took it to prose. On textbook articles of about 1,900 words, fill in the blank scores ran 47% read aloud against 35% read silently. Here is how far each one has got. // InnerVoice Erin Kunz and Frank Willett at Stanford worked with four people who can barely speak. Three of them have ALS. The fourth had a stroke in the brainstem. Each was asked to imagine saying a word. Motor cortex lit up in much the same shape as a try at speech, only weaker. Not identical, though. One dimension separates intent from imagining. Across a 125,000 word vocabulary the word error rate ran from 26% to 54%. The best of them read about three words in four. So the team fitted a lock. Inner speech got read only after that four word phrase… caught 98.75% of the time in one volunteer. Free-form thinking is another matter. No full readable sentences came out of it. Since then he has run the kit at home for more than 3,800 hours. Nobody from the lab sat in the room. That came to 183,060 sentences. Close to two million words, at 56 words a minute. In formal testing the accuracy sat above 99%, again across 125,000 words. He marked 92% as at least mostly right, on a four step scale. One man, four arrays, one paper. It all rests on him. A Shanghai team at Huashan Hospital worked with a woman of 43\. She was in for an epilepsy work-up. Her own speech worked, and she read each character aloud. A 256 channel flexible grid went on the brain surface, next to her clinical monitoring. Offline, single syllables came in at 71% across a set of 394\. A separate decoder read the four tones at 69%. Live sentences ran at 61.5% of characters on brain data alone. A language model lifted that to 73%. One person, one ward, eleven days of recording. The finished system ran near 50 characters a minute. And the live run took its cue from the sound of her voice, not from her brain. I spend more than $20,000 a year on private research… the sort hedge funds pay for. Walled off from the public. Then I read the paper and count the people in it. Stanford’s release says 74% right. The paper prints word error rates of 26 to 54%. Same figure, turned inside out. China’s regulator cleared the first brain interface for sale on 13 March 2026\.
