Two sisters, one powder.
They are twins, so the genes line up.
One of them stirred plant fiber into a drink each morning.
The other got a dummy powder that tastes much the same.
Twelve weeks on, their memory scores had parted.

Both arms took the same amino acid powder and the same written exercise advice. Fiber was the one thing that differed. Each sachet held about 6.9 grams of inulin and FOS. Mean age was 73. Four in five were women. Randomizing inside a twin pair holds genes and childhood steady.

// The Catch
That trial was built to test legs, not brains.
Chair rise time was the target, and it did not budge.
Times shifted by about a second in both arms, with nothing between them.
The paper gives the size of that change, not its direction.
Thinking sat in the second tier of outcomes.
There the fiber arm pulled ahead on a combined score.
One test carried most of it, a visual memory task.
Errors on that task came out lower with fiber.
A press office led with the brain result. The paper led with legs, and legs did not budge. King's did say up front that muscle strength did not change. Second tier outcomes throw up more false positives. The main target is the one a trial is built for. Missing data ran heavier on the brain tests than on anything else. That makes this a lead, not a verdict.

// The Rematch
A second trial ran the same twelve weeks in 2026.
Forty nine adults aged 60 to 80 saw it through.
They ate 10 grams of prebiotic fiber a day in a bread roll.
Thinking was the main target this time, not a side question.
Nothing separated the groups.
On one memory measure the placebo arm did better.
A higher dose and a cleaner question gave the opposite answer. Two randomized trials in older adults, pointing different ways. A 2026 review calls the evidence base small and mixed.

Cheap and plausible, with the trials split.
|
Gut bugs that feed on inulin make short chain fats.
Some reach the blood… and turn up in human spinal fluid.
Most get burned off by the gut wall and the liver first.
Nobody has shown that eating inulin lifts the level inside a brain.
The better evidenced routes run through the vagus nerve and gut hormones.
This trial measured none of them.
A typical American diet carries about 2.6 grams of inulin a day.
The trial added a 7.5 gram sachet on top of that.

Chicory root leads the fresh list at about 42 grams per 100. |
| 02 |
Jerusalem artichoke comes next at 18, then leek and onion. |
| 03 |
Buying the powder? Begin at a gram or two a day. |
| 04 |
Climb toward the trial dose of 7.5 grams across two or three weeks. |
| 05 |
Gas and bloating are common early on, and they tend to settle. |
Nobody sits down to eat raw chicory root. An onion is nearer 4 grams raw, and a banana under 1. Dried garlic beats it at 28 grams per 100, because the water is gone. Raw garlic sits near 12.5. Van Loo measured those foods, tabulated in a survey of American diets. Nobody has tested a slow climb against starting at full dose.

I ran the powder for six weeks.
The first three days were loud.
By week two my gut had settled, and 7.5 grams went down fine.
What I cannot tell you is whether my memory budged.
One man with no control arm proves nothing at all.
More than $20,000 a year goes on private research feeds here.
A trial can miss its target and still get a glowing release. I say so when that happens.
Anyone on a low FODMAP plan should ask a doctor before adding inulin.
