Leonardo Cohen and his NIH team watched 33 people learn a five digit code.
Most of the gain landed in the rest gaps, not the practice bursts. In those gaps the brain replayed the sequence about 25 times.

That man is a volunteer at UC Davis, in the BrainGate2 trial.
His neural signals reach a voice in about 25 milliseconds. That is roughly the delay on your own speech.
Listeners caught about 60% of his words. Without the implant they caught 4%.
And he can bend the pitch. A statement turns into a question, or into a melody.
Sergey Stavisky, who led the lab: “With instantaneous voice synthesis, neuroprosthesis users will be able to be more included in a conversation.”

They watched short clips. An AI then wrote sentences to match the scans.
Given 100 clips, the text pointed at the right one about half the time. Chance sits at 1%.
