Three Senses Coming Back Online

A gene put into the ear, a chip the size of a grain of rice under the retina, and a leg that answers to the nervous system. Plus the free move with the biggest trial behind it.

A girl of seven, deaf from birth.

One gene in her ear held a broken copy.

Surgeons sent in a working copy on a virus.

Four months later her hearing sat near normal…

Sound, sight and the sense of your own limbs. All three are back on the bench.

Book The Hearing Test

Frank Lin’s team gave 977 adults either hearing aids or health classes. All were 70 to 84, with hearing loss and nothing done about it.

Across the trial, three years of aids moved the main measure nowhere.

But 238 of them came in with more risk factors and weaker scores. In that group, thinking held up 48% better across the three years. A subgroup result carries less weight than the full trial.

01 Book a test if speech in a noisy room is a strain.
02 Ask for your numbers, not a pass or a fail.
03 If you get aids, wear them daily rather than for guests.
04 Give the fit a month, and go back for a tune.
05 Put the next check in the diary a year out.

// The Pivot

The senses feed the mind

Gene therapy and chips need a surgeon and a trial slot. A hearing test needs a phone call.

// SoundGene

Ten patients in China took one injection each. It went in through the round window, at the base of the cochlea.

Every one carried a broken OTOF gene. The ear could not pass sound along.

Hearing thresholds fell from 106 decibels to 52. Most of the gain arrived inside a month.

Ages ran from 1 to 24. Children of five to eight did best.

Nothing serious went wrong across six to twelve months… but this was a single arm, with no control group.

// PixelSight

A chip two millimetres square now sits under 38 retinas. It holds 378 pixels, powered by infrared light beamed from a pair of glasses.

These are eyes with the central vision burnt out by macular disease.

Thirty two reached a year. Of those, 26 gained two chart lines or better. The average came to five.

Twenty seven could read letters, words and numbers at home, with heavy zoom.

Nineteen had serious eye events, mostly within two months. Almost all of those cleared up.

Which sense would you guard first?

Pick one and hit send.

👂 Hearing

👀 Sight

🦵 Balance and limbs

👃 Smell and taste

// LimbSense

Hugh Herr’s group at MIT rewires muscle pairs during the amputation itself.

Each pair keeps pulling against the other. So the brain still knows where the limb sits.

Seven people had that surgery, against seven with the standard one.

Top walking speed reached 1.78 metres a second, against 1.26. That is 41% quicker, and level with people who kept both legs.

Stairs, slopes and stepping over things came easier too. The muscle feedback rose by only 18% of a natural leg.

Most advice on the senses stops at eating carrots.

I spend more than $20,000 a year on private research… the sort hedge funds pay for. Walled off from the public.

Then I read the paper behind the claim.

My own ears went in for a test this month, out of curiosity. The numbers came back fine, and that is one man’s report.

Chips and viruses want a surgeon. Your ears want a phone call.

Call Yourself By Name Before You Speak

Eighty nine students had five minutes to prepare a speech for a panel they were told would judge them. The ones who coached themselves by name came out in better shape, and blind coders scored their speeches higher.
