A kidney from a pig.
Tim Andrews had spent about two years on dialysis.
Mass General gave him one grown inside a gene edited pig.
It ran 271 days with no dialysis at all…
No pig organ has ever served a person that long.

The Ten Second Stand
Claudio Gil Araujo tested 1,702 adults in Rio.
All were aged 51 to 75.
Each stood on one leg for ten seconds, with nothing to hold.
One in five could not manage it.
Seven years on, deaths ran 84% higher in that group.
That holds after age, sex, weight and illness are accounted for.

Bare feet, flat floor, a wall within reach. |

Rest one foot against the back of the other calf. |
| 03 |
Let both arms hang and fix your eyes ahead. |
| 04 |
Hold for ten seconds, then swap sides. |

Three tries count as a pass. That is how they scored it. |
Failure ran about 5% in the early fifties and about 54% past 70. By the end, 17.5% of the failers had died, against 4.6% of the rest. This is a marker, not a cure. The authors say plainly that nobody knows whether practising the stand changes the odds.

Andrews got his pig kidney at Massachusetts General in Boston.
He kept it 271 days with no dialysis.
No pig kidney has lasted that long in a person.
Then doctors cut his immune drugs to fight an infection.
The organ was injured and came out in October 2025.
Dialysis carried him three more months.
Then a human kidney came free.
That one worked straight away, with no sign his body had been primed against it.
The pig kidney did not last. What it bought was time, and a clean run at the human organ when one came.

// SpareHeart
United Therapeutics has FDA clearance to start a pig heart trial.
Each organ carries ten gene edits.
Six human genes added, four pig genes switched off.
The firm announced it on 15 May 2026, for a trial called EXPRESS.
It opens with up to two people and grows to about ten.
Each has to be 50 or over.
All are at the last stage of heart failure, with nothing left to try.
This is clearance to run a study, not a licence to treat. No pig heart recipient has yet lived a year.

// GrownVessel
Symvess is a blood vessel grown from human cells.
The cells are washed out before it goes in.
FDA approval came in December 2024, the first of its kind.
It goes into a torn artery in an arm or a leg.
The limb has to be at risk, with no usable vein to hand.
Across 54 patients, 67% still had flow at 30 days.
Nine per cent lost the limb inside a month, and 15% by three years.
That 67% is primary patency, the strict count. Reopened vessels take it to 72%. This is trauma surgery, not a spare part for wear. But no other human tissue can be kept on a shelf.

Most organ headlines come from a press office, not a paper.
So I count the people in the trial.
Two for the heart. Fifty four for the vessel, and one for the kidney.
That is where it stands, further along than last year.
I stand on one leg while the kettle boils. That is one man's report, not a trial.
